How to send large files between your PCs without cloud storage

A folder of holiday videos, a big project, a game's save files, a virtual machine: when you need it on another of your PCs, uploading it to cloud storage and downloading it again takes twice as long and leaves a copy somewhere else. With RemoteAccessApp you copy it straight from one PC to the other.

Here's how, with the tricks that matter for big files: picking the folder, resuming after a drop and sending to several PCs.

  • PC to PC, no cloud copy
  • Resumes after a drop
  • Several PCs at once

Before you start

  • Both PCs in your account, each with RemoteAccessApp set up (Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit). See how to access your PC remotely if you haven't done that yet.
  • A free account. File transfer between your PCs is free. It needs an account: a connection made with only a code can't copy files, though you can still attach files to chat messages.
  • Both PCs online. Files can only be sent while a PC is online, so keep the receiving PC awake until the copy finishes. If you copy to the same PC often, it helps to turn a spare PC into an always-on PC you can reach from anywhere.
  • Room on the other end. A full disk is the most common reason a big copy fails.

Three ways to send files

  1. Step 1: Drop files on the remote screen

During a session in the RemoteAccessApp Console, drag files from your PC onto the remote screen. They arrive in that PC's Downloads folder. Send files in the session toolbar (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F) picks files the same way.

  2. Step 2: Browse the other PC's folders

Browse files in the session toolbar opens the PC's folders. Go to the folder you want, then upload into it, or select files there and download them to this PC. Moving everything to a new computer? Moving to a new Windows 11 PC walks through the whole move.

  3. Step 3: Use the File transfer page

Open File transfer in the sidebar, or right-click a PC on the Devices page. Pick a PC, move through its folders, select files and click Upload or Download. The Transfers list shows the progress of each one. The help article on sending files to and from a PC also explains what to do when a transfer fails.

Big files: what helps

  • Interrupted copies resume. If the connection drops halfway through a large file, the copy continues from the last good point instead of starting over. Paused copies show a Resume button.
  • Short network problems are retried by themselves. Permanent ones, like a full disk or a file that's open in another program, tell you why straight away. If a copy keeps failing and you contact support, finding troubleshooting logs shows where the app keeps them.
  • Nothing broken is left behind. Cancelling a transfer removes the half-copied file.
  • Updates wait. RemoteAccessApp doesn't update itself while file transfers are running.
  • The upload speed of the sending PC usually sets the pace. A network cable instead of Wi-Fi helps, and so does pausing cloud backups and other big uploads while you copy.

Send to several PCs at once

On the File transfer page, choose Send to several PCs, tick the PCs, add the files and click Send. Each PC gets its own copy, and the list shows how each one went, so a PC that was offline is easy to spot and try again. It's handy for an installer, a set of documents or a config file that every PC needs.

From a phone, Mac or Chromebook

In a browser session, Send files in the session's Shortcuts menu puts files from the device you're on into the PC's Downloads folder. Use the Windows app when you need to browse folders or download from the PC. Students reaching a home PC from a school laptop can read how to use your home PC for uni from any laptop.

Is it private?

Files are copied between your PCs during your session and aren't kept anywhere in between. Sessions in the Windows app are end-to-end encrypted, files included. Files you receive are checked by Windows like any other download, and a file with an unsafe name is skipped rather than copied. The person at a PC can choose not to share its files, and every transfer shows in your activity.

Servers too
