Connection problems

Relay location

Pick which RemoteAccessApp relay your sessions go through, or let Automatic use the fastest one. See the ping to each location and test again.

What it is

Sessions to PCs in your account go through a RemoteAccessApp relay. There are relays in more than one part of the world, and a session is fastest through the one closest to you and the PC. PCs set up for a console on the same local network connect directly instead: see relay or direct connections and firewalls.

Automatic - fastest (recommended) is the default. The app tests every relay location in the background and uses the fastest one. You don't need to change anything.

Choose a location

  1. In the Console, open Settings and find Connection, then Relay location. On a PC with the Agent, open the Agent's window: the setting is under Relay location there.
  2. The list shows each location with its ping, for example Germany (Frankfurt) · 18 ms. A lower number is faster.
  3. Pick a location to always use it, or pick Automatic to go back to the fastest.
  4. Select Test again to measure every location now, for example after you move to another network.

A choice in the Console applies to the sessions you open from it. A choice in the Agent applies to how that PC waits for connections. Sessions that are already open stay where they are; new ones use your choice.

If a location is unavailable

When the location you picked is down for maintenance or doesn't answer, the app switches to the fastest relay by itself and says so, for example Germany (Frankfurt) is unavailable right now, using the fastest relay. It goes back to your choice when that location is available again. You don't need to do anything.

Good to know

  • The app tests again by itself every 30 minutes and whenever your network changes, and it remembers the result, so connections start on the right relay straight away.
  • The pings here are to the relays. To check the line from the device you're on, the internet speed test for remote access measures its delay and download speed to RemoteAccessApp.
  • Sessions stay end-to-end encrypted through any relay. The relay passes your session along without being able to see your screen or what you type.
  • If every session feels slow whichever location you pick, see Slow or choppy sessions.
