Updates and troubleshooting
Automatic updates and the update service
How RemoteAccessApp updates itself, why it never interrupts a session, what the update service does, and what to do if an update fails.
Updates install by themselves
RemoteAccessApp checks for new versions on its own. Every update is signed and verified before anything is installed. Settings, then Updates, shows your Current version and has Check for updates.
- Never during a session. The Console waits while a live session is open. The Agent waits until nobody is connected to its PC, then installs.
- If nobody is using the Console, the update installs straight away. Otherwise a small window says Updating RemoteAccessApp in 60 seconds, with Update now and, once per version, In 1 hour.
- A banner and an Update to pill at the top also show a new version. Install now installs it; Hide only hides the banner.
After updating, the app shows what changed. You can read it any time under What's new.
The update service
RemoteAccessApp's setup installs it just for you, with no administrator and no Windows permission prompt. The app then installs its own updates the same way: silently, with no prompt, so PCs you reach update even when nobody is there.
When an administrator installs RemoteAccessApp for all users of a PC, it adds the RemoteAccessApp Update Service. It installs updates silently too, with no Windows permission prompt. A PC that was installed for all users stays that way when it updates. An install for all users, with unattended access on, also lets you control windows that run as administrator; see an admin window is blocking my clicks.
If an update fails
You may see "The update failed" in the Console, "The update didn't install" on a PC, or an alert that a PC couldn't update. The PC keeps running its current version, and nothing was changed.
- Try again later: RemoteAccessApp retries by itself on its next check.
- On a PC you're at, use Check for updates in Settings or in the RemoteAccessApp icon's menu.
- Make sure the PC has free disk space and can reach the internet.
- If it keeps failing, the update service's log says why. See troubleshooting logs, and contact support.
You can get an alert when one of your PCs couldn't update: Settings, then Notifications, then An update failed.
Still stuck? Email [email protected] with your app version (Settings, About) and what you were trying to do. In the app, Help, Contact support fills that in.
