Switch from UltraVNC

Switch from UltraVNC: no repeater, no plugins, no open ports

UltraVNC is free, but getting it to work over the internet is your job: its feature table says NAT-to-NAT connections go via a repeater you host, the repeater needs a machine both sides can reach or ports forwarded on the router, encryption is a plugin, and browser access relies on Java.

RemoteAccessApp reaches Windows PCs through any router with nothing to host, encrypts sessions end to end in the app, and opens your PCs in any modern browser. Free for 5 PCs, at home or at work.

  • No repeater to host
  • End-to-end encrypted in the app
  • Any browser, no Java

Fed up with UltraVNC? Here's what changes

  • A repeater to host, or ports to forward

With UltraVNC: UltraVNC's repeater page says the repeater has to run on a machine both the server and the viewer can reach: open on the internet, or internal with ports forwarded by the router.

With RemoteAccessApp: PCs connect out to RemoteAccessApp's relay, so there's nothing to host and nothing to forward. Switching from RustDesk covers the same hosted relay.

  • Encryption is a plugin

With UltraVNC: UltraVNC's feature table lists encryption for UltraVNC as a plugin.

With RemoteAccessApp: Sessions from the Windows app are end-to-end encrypted, with nothing to add. In a browser they're encrypted too, but not end to end. Switching from TightVNC covers the same encryption.

  • Browser access needs Java

With UltraVNC: UltraVNC's site says its JavaViewer works from a web browser on any system supporting Java.

With RemoteAccessApp: Open your PCs in any modern browser, phones included, with nothing to install.

More reasons to switch

  • Consent built in

The PC asks first unless unattended access is on, and a banner shows during every session, with chat, view-only and quit.

  • Your PCs in one list

Every PC shows on your Devices page with who's online, with no addresses or IDs to keep track of. You reach them over the internet on the free plan, as switching from Splashtop explains.

  • Still need VNC?

Save VNC hosts in RemoteAccessApp and open them in tabs, optionally through an SSH tunnel. RDP and VNC manager.

  • Commands and servers

PowerShell on a PC, one command on many PCs, and SSH, SFTP and RDP in the same app. The SSH side is free for work too, as switching from Xshell explains.

Switch from UltraVNC in 2 minutes

What carries over, what doesn't and tips for each kind of tool are in the switching guide.

  1. Step 1: Create a free RemoteAccessApp account

Sign up with your email. No card is needed, and the free plan covers 5 PCs.

  2. Step 2: Install RemoteAccessApp on each PC you want to reach

Download the installer, choose Set up this PC and sign in, or type the 6-digit setup code from Add a PC on your dashboard. It installs without administrator rights, next to UltraVNC.

  3. Step 3: Turn on unattended access on your own PCs

If nobody will be at a PC when you connect, switch on unattended access at that PC (right-click the RemoteAccessApp icon in the taskbar tray). How to do it safely.

  4. Step 4: Connect from the app or a browser

Open the RemoteAccessApp Console on your own PC, or sign in at remoteaccessapp.com in any browser, and try each PC while you still have the old tool as a fallback.

  5. Step 5: Close the ports you opened

Once every PC works through RemoteAccessApp, remove the port forwarding rules and the repeater you set up for VNC, so they aren't left open to the internet.
