Switch from Solar-PuTTY: add FTP, RDP, VNC and your PCs

Solar-PuTTY is SolarWinds' free session manager for Windows, with tabs and graphical SFTP. Its feature list covers SCP, SSH, Telnet and SFTP: FTP, RDP and VNC aren't on it, and neither are server-to-server copies or a host list that follows you.

RemoteAccessApp adds them: SSH tabs, SFTP and FTP file managers with server-to-server copies, saved RDP and VNC, your Windows PCs, and a host list synced to your account.

  • FTP, RDP and VNC
  • Server-to-server copies
  • Host list syncs

Fed up with Solar-PuTTY? Here's what changes

  • No FTP, RDP or VNC

With Solar-PuTTY: SolarWinds lists SCP, SSH, Telnet and SFTP support for Solar-PuTTY.

With RemoteAccessApp: SFTP and FTP file managers, saved RDP and VNC connections, and serial, all in tabs. Switching from Remote Desktop Manager compares the same connections in one window.

  • Copies go through your disk

With Solar-PuTTY: Moving files between two servers usually means downloading them and uploading them again.

With RemoteAccessApp: Stream files straight between two servers, with no temporary copy, or upload to many at once. Switching from FileZilla and switching from Cyberduck go through both in detail.

  • No browser or phone access

With Solar-PuTTY: SolarWinds offers Solar-PuTTY as a Windows app.

With RemoteAccessApp: Your saved SSH hosts also open in a terminal in any browser, and your host list syncs to your account. The same synced list is covered in switching from mRemoteNG.

More reasons to switch

  • Scripts on many hosts

Run a saved script on many SSH hosts at once with each one's output and exit code.

  • Your PCs

Remote desktop to your Windows PCs through any router.

  • Host keys checked

A changed server key is refused with a warning.

Switch from Solar-PuTTY in 2 minutes

What carries over, what doesn't and tips for each kind of tool are in the switching guide.

  1. Step 1: Install RemoteAccessApp and sign in

Download the free installer for Windows 10 or 11 and choose the Console. It installs without administrator rights. Create a free account if you don't have one.

  2. Step 2: Bring your hosts across

On the Connections tab, Import from this PC… finds hosts in your SSH config file, saved .rdp files and Windows' recent Remote Desktop connections, and Import from file… reads a CSV file (there's a template to fill in). Add the rest by hand: address, port, user name and protocol. Your Solar-PuTTY setup stays as it is.

  3. Step 3: Import your keys

Import your private keys for key sign-in: OpenSSH, PEM and PuTTY .ppk keys are read, passphrase-protected ones included. Passwords are never imported: you're asked for each one the first time, and can save it encrypted on your PC.

  4. Step 4: Check each server's key and connect

The first time you connect, compare the host key fingerprint with the one you expect and trust it. A server whose key changes later is refused with a warning.

  5. Step 5: Add your RDP and VNC hosts

Save your RDP and VNC connections next to your SSH hosts, or import .rdp files with Import from this PC…. RDP and VNC manager.
