Permanent password for your PC
An optional password, set at the PC, for reaching your own PC from a new computer later without anyone there to click Allow.
A permanent password is for when you want to reach your own PC later from a computer it doesn't know yet, with nobody at the PC to click Allow. It's off until you turn it on, and only someone at the PC can turn it on.
Turn it on
- On the PC, open RemoteAccessApp. On Home, under This PC's code, choose More, then Permanent password.
- Choose a strong password: at least 12 characters, and not a common one.
- Save it. Keep it somewhere safe: anyone with this password and a way to find your PC can connect without your Allow.
You can't change it while someone is connected. To turn it off, open the same window and choose to turn it off. If this PC is a virtual machine, the copies you make when you clone a VM that's in your account keep the same permanent password.
Use it
The password can only be typed:
- from a PC in your Recent PCs, or
- after connecting with the PC's code, while the Allow prompt is waiting: choose Enter this PC's password instead.
There's no way to reach a PC with a short ID and its password alone, so nobody can guess their way in.
Wrong passwords
After 5 wrong entries, password entry pauses for 15 minutes, and the PC gets a new code. The person at the PC sees a quiet notice: "Someone entered a wrong code for this PC several times".
The password is checked by the PC itself. RemoteAccessApp's servers never see it.
This is different from a connection password, which is an extra check everyone has to pass before connecting to an account PC.
