Protect a PC with a connection password
Add a password that anyone must type before connecting to a PC, choose whether devices may remember it, and what happens after wrong tries.
A connection password is an extra check for one PC. Before anyone can connect, from the app or a browser, they have to type it. It's separate from your account password, which you can protect with two-factor sign-in.
Set it up at the PC
Only someone at the PC can set or change it.
- Right-click the RemoteAccessApp icon next to the clock and click Connection password….
- Tick Require a password to connect to this PC and choose a password of at least 6 characters.
- Click Save password.
In the same window you can also choose:
- Let people remember this password on their device, for at most 1 day, 7 days, 30 days or until removed. See list… shows the devices that remember it, and Forget all makes every one of them type it again.
- Skip the Allow prompt after the correct password, if the password should be enough on its own.
A connection password is a good fit for a PC that's always on or has unattended access. To also let consoles connect only from networks you choose, set up trusted networks for the PC. The checklist on how to keep your remote access safe covers the other settings worth checking.
Connecting to a PC with a password
The Console asks Password required and Enter the password for the PC. Tick Remember me on this device if the PC allows it, then click Connect. If you close the box, the session shows that the PC requires a password, with Enter password to try again.
Wrong passwords
- "That's not the password for" the PC tells you how many tries are left.
- After 5 wrong tries there's a short pause before you can try again, and each lockout is longer than the last.
- "That took too long" means the PC waited too long for the password. Enter it again.
If you've forgotten it, someone at the PC can set a new one from the same menu.
The password is checked by the PC itself. RemoteAccessApp's servers never see it.
This is different from a permanent password for your PC, which lets you reach your own PC from a new computer with nobody there to click Allow.
