Servers and SSH
Copy files between two servers
Move or copy files from one server, or one of your PCs, to another in a transfer tab, with pause, retry, verify and clear choices when names clash.
A transfer tab copies files between any two places: This PC, a saved SFTP, SSH or FTP host, or one of your online PCs. Neither server signs in to the other. The files stream through the PC you're using, so neither server needs to know the other's password. Server-to-server file transfers for DevOps explains why this saves time over downloading and uploading again.
Start a transfer
- On the Connections page, open Copy files and choose Copy between servers… (also in Ctrl+K).
- Or right-click a host and choose Copy files to another server….
- Or, in an SFTP or FTP tab, choose Open second server.
Pick a place on each side, select files, and copy them across. To send files to one of your PCs during a session instead, see send files to and from a PC.
Choices
- Copy or Move: move deletes each file from the source once it's safely copied.
- At once: how many files copy at the same time.
- If it exists: what to do when the name is already taken: Skip, Keep both or Replace. Tick Do this for the rest of this transfer to stop being asked.
- Verify: checks each copy against the original.
While it runs, use Pause all, Resume all, Retry failed, Clear finished and Cancel all. Closing the tab asks Stop the transfers?, so nothing stops by accident.
Using one of your PCs as a side needs Pro.
When something fails
Failed files stay in the list with the reason. Fix the cause (space, permissions, a dropped connection), then click Retry failed. See copy files with SFTP and FTP for the common reasons.
