Servers and SSH
Copy files with SFTP and FTP
Browse a server's files next to your own, copy them both ways by dragging, and sort out transfers that fail or names that clash.
Open a server's files
Add a host as Files (SFTP) or Files (FTP) on the Connections page, or open the files of an SSH host with Files on its card (see hosts and sessions). The tab has two panes: This PC on one side and the server on the other.
FTPS
FTP hosts have an Encryption setting under More options:
- Plain FTP: the usual FTP.
- FTPS (explicit TLS): starts like plain FTP and switches to TLS before signing in. Most FTPS servers use this.
- FTPS (implicit TLS): TLS from the start, on the server's own FTPS port (the port changes with it).
With FTPS, the server's certificate is checked before your password is sent. If it's self-signed, you see its fingerprint once and choose Trust and connect. You're warned if it changes later. See server keys and certificates.
Copy files
- Drag files between the two panes, or drop files from File Explorer onto the server pane. Dropping onto a folder copies into that folder.
- Select files and click Upload or Download between the panes.
- Right-click for Copy to the other pane, Copy to another tab…, New folder…, Refresh (F5) and Delete (Del).
- Upload to servers… (Ctrl+Shift+U) sends the same files to several servers.
If a file with the same name is already there, you're asked Replace existing items? before anything is overwritten.
Follow transfers
The Transfers area shows each file: Queued, Uploading, Downloading, Done or Failed. Clear finished tidies the list.
When a copy fails
A failed row shows the reason. The usual ones:
- Permission denied: the user you signed in as can't write to that folder. Pick a folder they own, or ask the server's admin.
- No space left: the disk on that side is full.
- Already in that folder or can't be copied into itself: choose another destination.
- Unsafe file name: the server sent a name that could write outside the folder you chose, so it was skipped.
- The connection dropped: reconnect the tab and copy again. If it won't connect at all, see can't connect to a server.
If an FTPS host says the server doesn't offer FTPS, turn on TLS on the FTP server, or set the host to Plain FTP.
To copy straight from one server to another, see server-to-server transfers. To send files to one of your RemoteAccessApp PCs, see send files to and from a PC.
