Switch from KiTTY

Switch from KiTTY: SSH with a file manager built in

KiTTY is a Windows-only fork of PuTTY for SSH and Telnet. For file transfer, its README points to pscp.exe and WinSCP integration, which means another program for the files on your servers.

RemoteAccessApp puts SSH tabs and a two-pane SFTP and FTP file manager in one window, with server-to-server copies, saved RDP and VNC, and a host list that follows your account.

  • File manager built in
  • Host list syncs free
  • RDP and VNC too

Fed up with KiTTY? Here's what changes

  • Files through other programs

With KiTTY: KiTTY's README lists pscp.exe and WinSCP integration for file transfer.

With RemoteAccessApp: A two-pane SFTP and FTP file manager is built in, with drag and drop, server-to-server copies and uploads to many servers.

  • Windows only

With KiTTY: KiTTY's README says it's only designed for Windows.

With RemoteAccessApp: Your host list syncs to your account, and your SSH hosts open in a terminal in any browser, on a Mac or a phone too. The same free sync comes up in switching from Termius.

  • No RDP or VNC

With KiTTY: Its README describes a Telnet and SSH client.

With RemoteAccessApp: Saved RDP and VNC connections in tabs, and remote desktop to your Windows PCs. Switching from Solar-PuTTY covers the same RDP and VNC tabs.

More reasons to switch

  • One command, every server

Send a command to every open SSH tab, or run a saved script on many hosts with each one's output and exit code. Switching from Tabby covers the same scripts on many servers.

  • Your .ppk keys

Import PuTTY .ppk, OpenSSH and PEM keys, passphrase-protected ones included.

  • Host keys checked

A changed server key is refused with a warning, never silently accepted.

Switch from KiTTY if

  • You want the file manager in the same app as your terminals.
  • You work from more than one PC.
  • You also open RDP and VNC connections.

Switch from KiTTY in 2 minutes

What carries over, what doesn't and tips for each kind of tool are in the switching guide.

  1. Step 1: Install RemoteAccessApp and sign in

Download the free installer for Windows 10 or 11 and choose the Console. It installs without administrator rights. Create a free account if you don't have one.

  2. Step 2: Bring your hosts across

Export your KiTTY sessions to a .reg file, then on the Connections tab click the arrow next to Add host, Import from file… and choose it. Your sessions show in a list before anything is added. Passwords are never imported. Import saved sessions.

  3. Step 3: Import your keys

Import your PuTTY .ppk keys as they are (OpenSSH and PEM keys work too, passphrase-protected ones included). Passwords are never imported: you're asked for each one the first time, and can save it encrypted on your PC.

  4. Step 4: Check each server's key and connect

The first time you connect, compare the host key fingerprint with the one you expect and trust it. A server whose key changes later is refused with a warning.

  5. Step 5: Open a server's files

Open an SFTP tab for a host: your PC on one side, the server on the other. Copy files with SFTP and FTP.
