Switch from NoMachine: a free plan, browser access and no port mapping

NoMachine's FAQ says its free server-side edition has been discontinued as of version 10, its entry-level Personal Edition allows one active desktop connection at a time, browser access is kept for its enterprise server products, and reaching a PC from outside can mean mapping port 4000 on your router.

RemoteAccessApp is free for 5 Windows PCs, with 3 open at once, browser access on every plan, and no ports to map. For personal and work use.

  • Free for 5 PCs
  • Browser access included
  • No port mapping

Fed up with NoMachine? Here's what changes

  • The free server edition is gone

With NoMachine: NoMachine's FAQ says the free server-side edition has been discontinued, pointing users to the Personal Edition or to staying on version 9.

With RemoteAccessApp: RemoteAccessApp's free plan covers 5 PCs and 5 saved hosts for personal and work use, on the current version, with updates. Professional use counts too, as switching from Supremo explains.

  • One connection at a time

With NoMachine: Its FAQ says the Personal Edition allows only one active desktop connection at a time.

With RemoteAccessApp: 3 sessions open at once on the free plan, side by side, with Mirror input. Pro removes the limit.

  • Browser access is for enterprise products

With NoMachine: NoMachine says web-based access through a browser is a feature of its enterprise server products.

With RemoteAccessApp: Open your PCs in any browser on the free plan, phones included. Leaving TeamViewer makes the same point about browser access.

  • Port 4000 on your router

With NoMachine: Its knowledge base says reaching a PC from outside needs an external port mapped to port 4000, done automatically only when the router supports UPnP or NAT-PMP.

With RemoteAccessApp: PCs connect out to RemoteAccessApp, so it works through any router with nothing to map. The same goes for VNC ports and repeaters, covered in switching from TightVNC and switching from UltraVNC.

More reasons to switch

  • Consent at the PC

An Allow prompt unless unattended access is on, and a banner during every session with chat, view-only and quit.

  • Commands and Windows tools

PowerShell or Command Prompt on a PC, one command on many PCs, and processes, services and the Event Log, free. Switching from Zoho Assist covers these for support teams.

  • Servers in the same app

SSH terminal tabs, SFTP and FTP file managers, server-to-server copies, RDP and VNC.

Switch from NoMachine in 2 minutes

What carries over, what doesn't and tips for each kind of tool are in the switching guide.

  1. Step 1: Create a free RemoteAccessApp account

Sign up with your email. No card is needed, and the free plan covers 5 PCs.

  2. Step 2: Install RemoteAccessApp on each PC you want to reach

Download the installer, choose Set up this PC and sign in, or type the 6-digit setup code from Add a PC on your dashboard. It installs without administrator rights, next to NoMachine.

  3. Step 3: Turn on unattended access on your own PCs

If nobody will be at a PC when you connect, switch on unattended access at that PC (right-click the RemoteAccessApp icon in the taskbar tray). How to do it safely.

  4. Step 4: Connect from the app or a browser

Open the RemoteAccessApp Console on your own PC, or sign in at remoteaccessapp.com in any browser, and try each PC while you still have the old tool as a fallback.

  5. Step 5: Remove the port mapping

Once every PC works through RemoteAccessApp, remove the port 4000 mapping from your router and uninstall what you no longer use.
