Switch from MeshCentral

Switch from MeshCentral: no server of your own to run

MeshCentral is open-source computer management where, in its own words, you run your own web server: its documentation says it runs anywhere Node.js does. Keeping that server online, patched and backed up is then up to you, and its desktop prompt and notification are settings you have to turn on.

RemoteAccessApp has nothing to host. Install it on your Windows PCs, sign in, and connect from the app or any browser, with an Allow prompt and banner on by default. Free for 5 PCs.

  • No server to run
  • Consent on by default
  • Free for 5 PCs

Fed up with MeshCentral? Here's what changes

  • You run the server

With MeshCentral: MeshCentral's documentation says you run your own web server to manage computers, on any environment that supports Node.js.

With RemoteAccessApp: Nothing to install, secure or back up: the relay, accounts and signed updates are run for you. There's no appliance either, as the BeyondTrust comparison explains.

  • Consent is a setting

With MeshCentral: Its configuration schema has options to enable a desktop prompt and a desktop notification.

With RemoteAccessApp: Every PC asks the person there first unless unattended access was switched on at that PC, and a banner shows during every session. If nobody answers, the request is denied; switching from Action1 looks at that in detail.

  • Updates are your job

With MeshCentral: Keeping a self-hosted server and its agents up to date is part of running it yourself.

With RemoteAccessApp: Installed apps update themselves, accept only updates signed with RemoteAccessApp's key, and never update while someone is connected.

  • You want consent on every PC by default.
  • You want server-to-server copies and saved RDP and VNC hosts too.

What carries over, what doesn't and tips for each kind of tool are in the switching guide.

  1. Step 1: Create a free RemoteAccessApp account

Sign up with your email. No card is needed, and the free plan covers 5 PCs.

  2. Step 2: Install RemoteAccessApp on each PC you want to reach

Download the installer, choose Set up this PC and sign in, or type the 6-digit setup code from Add a PC on your dashboard. It installs without administrator rights, next to MeshCentral.

  3. Step 3: Turn on unattended access on your own PCs

If nobody will be at a PC when you connect, switch on unattended access at that PC (right-click the RemoteAccessApp icon in the taskbar tray). How to do it safely.

  4. Step 4: Connect from the app or a browser

Open the RemoteAccessApp Console on your own PC, or sign in at remoteaccessapp.com in any browser, and try each PC while you still have the old tool as a fallback.

  5. Step 5: Retire the server

Once every PC works through RemoteAccessApp, remove the old agents and shut down the server you hosted, so it isn't left running.
